Learn to Climb | Self Rescue Skills

Already know how to lead trad climbs and starting to go out on big adventures, but unsure of what to do if something goes wrong? Or experienced second frequently finding yourself belaying in remote areas and wondering what to do if something goes wrong? This is the course for you. This course will cover a variety of rope rescue skills to get you, and your climbing partner, out of trouble and to help you avoid problems in the first place. The skills learned are valuable in more than just rescue scenarios, and give you a great set of problem solving skills for your climbing career. Scenarios covered such as, the second cannot climb the route or has fallen off and is hanging in space, the second has been hit by rock fall and is unconscious or perhaps its the leader who has hurt themselves and needs help. You may have just abseiled into the wrong place on the sea cliffs and need to get back out.

What Does this Course Cover?

All skills courses are tailored to the participants experience but can include;

  • Route choice and avoiding accidents with pre-planning
  • How to escape from a mountain routes and sea cliffs
  • Problem solving issues such as second can’t climb the route,
  • Practising rescue scenarios for an injured or unconscious second
  • Practising rescue scenarios for an injured lead climber
  • And more…

Who is this Course for?

This course is for your more experienced climber. You should have some outdoor lead climbing experience under your belt but want to expand your skill set and problem solving abilities. It is ideal for the climber who is already climbing (or wanting to climb) on multipitch mountain routes or more adventurous single pitch routes. You should be comfortable creating solid anchors, belaying a second and abseiling.

What Kit Do I Need?

Kit list will vary based on the weather conditions and objectives for the day, but most courses will require:

  • Warm clothes to climb in with spare layers to keep warm
  • Sturdy shoes (ideally rock climbing shoes but walking boots or trainers can also be used)
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Harness *
  • Helmet*
  • Climbing Equipment (Such as Belay device, Carabiner, Slings, etc) *
  • Snacks and Lunch

* Cove climbing can provide all the items with an asterisk but if you have your own please bring them along too!

Liam is a very experienced climber and has extensive local knowledge having climbed sport grade 8A, bouldered 8A and trad climbed E7 all on local seacliffs.
